Hello Simply Move Community, Winter Term 2023

The new year is fast approaching and so is the Winter Term. Are you ready to commit to another great year of yoga? Grab your furry friend (if you have one) and join me, I have a lot of ideas for this next year. I thought this picture was so cute!

If you joined in the Fall Term I hope you learned some new ways to make stepping up from dog pose to lunge more accessible. We will continue to use the tips from Fall Term and apply them to other yoga poses. Making yoga more accessible for your body is what it is all about.

Winter Term’s focus will be on Child's pose, along with more flows to get the body warm during the colder months. So get ready to move a lot, build some heat in the body, and relax some of the stress away.

Thank you so much for being part of the Simply Move Yoga Community!

Winter Term Focus - Child’s Pose and Triangle Pose:

As I mentioned above we will learn many new ways to do Child's pose or Balasana in Sanskrit. Child's pose is typically taught as a resting pose between yoga flows or as a restorative pose that is held for longer periods of time (see left picture for traditional Child's pose variation). Unfortunately, for many folks it can be a very uncomfortable position. It can cause more pain and discomfort than relaxation. You will learn many different options for experiencing Child's pose, including an option for not having to come all the way down to the floor.

Another fun and challenging pose that we will explore this term is Triangle pose or Trikonasana in Sanskrit. This is a great pose for strengthening the core and legs while stretching the legs and building focus. We will play around with ways to make Triangle pose work best for your body.

Winter Term classes will begin the week of January 9th.

Recommended props: a yoga mat, 2 blocks, 1-2 sturdy chairs, multiple blankets, and pillows or cushions.

*Please register by January 6th.

Anyone interested in learning about the Niyamas?

We covered the 5 Yamas in the Fall Term. While the Yamas are the guidelines, the Niyamas are considered the observances. If you’re interested, we can dive into a little more philosophy.

What are Niyamas?

The Yamas and Niyamas are part of the 8 fold path of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Pantanjali is thought to be the first person to put all yoga theory into writing. The Yamas and the Niyamas are guidelines to live by. Yamas means “restraint” and Niyamas means “observances”. This Winter Term we can focus on the Niyamas, which include:

  • Saucha - Purity
  • Santosha - Contentment
  • Tapas - Self-Discipline
  • Svadhyaya - Self Study
  • Ishvara Pranidhana - Surrender

Fundraiser Event

As you may know, I am all about finding ways to make my yoga classes more accessible. The most common barrier is affordability. I started selling T-shirts and hoodies as a fundraiser. All the proceeds go to raising funds to create scholarships for those who may not be able to afford classes. I also hope to build up a supply of yoga props to have available during events for those who may not be able to afford them. I relaunched the first fundraiser for a second round. It ends on Dec. 25th so if you would like to help me reach my goal of selling 30 items head over to my website: https://www.bonfire.com/store/simply-move/.

I have more design ideas planned so stay tuned. Thank you again to all who purchased something. I will keep you posted on how the money is being used throughout the year.

Speaking of Events!

Did you know you can hire me to come to your place of business or place of employment? Does your workplace need a yoga program to help with productivity or help relieve stress? Does your classroom need a yoga program to help regulate big emotions? I have experience working in multiple settings teaching groups how to use yoga in our daily lives. Contact me directly to discuss your individual needs and see how I can help.
